“Travel is never about a destination, but about a new way of seeing things…”
Welcome to Diva Diary.
My name is Deborah Humble and I’m an opera singer. Lots of people ask me what opera singing has to do with an obsession with travel. Since I first started singing professionally nearly 30 years ago, I have had to travel the world. Every new contract means a new city or country and a new opera house or concert hall. Luckily for me, contracts rarely dovetail perfectly, and so I developed the habit of adding a few days in between jobs to explore a destination more fully, or flying somewhere completely different to see something new.
I have travelled to nearly 90 countries now, and my desire to keep seeing the world and experiencing different cultures and sights has never dwindled.
Welsh born, I grew up in Adelaide. Since starting to sing professionally I have lived in London, Melbourne, Hamburg, Bologna and Paris. I’ve picked up a couple of languages along the way as well as lots of skills that come in handy for exploring the world. I love food and wine (I currently live on a vineyard in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales), cooking, hiking, photography (particularly wildlife) and anything to do with the water. I’ve recently started to take an interest in bird watching.
Having travelled solo for years, I have a particular interest in helping women gain confidence to see the world alone. I have lots of advice on how to dine alone in restaurants, how to keep the loneliness at bay, how to feel and stay safe in unfamiliar locations and how to deal with feelings of overwhelm and anxiety when it comes to planning and implementing travel itineraries. Ask me whatever you like!
I enjoy writing stories about my travel and musical experiences and hope you enjoy sharing them with me. Maybe the photographs will inspire you to visit a new destination. I look forward to hearing from you and reading your comments.
Until then, happy travels
